The Government of Mexico City announced a MX$1.50 (US$0.08) increase in the fare for public bus services, effective immediately, as part of a broader strategy to improve service quality, safety, and sustainability. The decision was presented in a joint press conference by Héctor García, Minister of Mobility (SEMOVI); César Cravioto, Minister of Government (SEGOB); and Juan Pablo de Botton, Minister of Administration and Finance (SAF).

“This decision was not easy, but it was made with the firm commitment to place users at the center and enhance travel conditions, ensuring safety, comfort, and efficiency for millions of daily passengers,” says García.

The fare increase aims to strengthen the quality of public transport by enabling fleet renewal, maintenance improvements, driver training, and progress toward a more sustainable and orderly system. García says that transport operators must strictly comply with the Mobility Law and the city’s Transit Regulations, ensuring that every peso contributes directly to safer and more efficient services.

“We are committed to improving both concessioned and non-concessioned transport services, while ensuring the capital remains a model of affordable and inclusive mobility,” says de Botton.

The fare adjustment applies only to buses; it does not apply to other transport systems managed by the city, including the Metro, Metrobús, Trolebús, Cablebús, and the Light Train, says Cravioto. He adds that SEGOB will collaborate with SEMOVI to ensure operators adhere to the new regulations and that no overcharging occurs.

The government says that the decision, announced on Oct. 31, was taken with “strict responsibility and social sensitivity,” seeking to minimize the impact on households while promoting dignified and sustainable urban mobility. Mexico City reiterated its commitment to providing an integrated, safe, accessible, and high-quality transport system that supports equitable and sustainable development for all residents.
