Mexico City’s mobility was greatly affected after a fire in control center halted the operation of six subway lines, as previously reported by MBN, forcing many to turn to other means of transportation to carry on with their daily lives. To ameliorate mobility conditions for public transportation users, Claudia Sheinbaum, Mayor of Mexico City, announced that the Passenger Transport Network (RTP) would help transport users of the affected lines free of charge, reported Animal Político. Metro Lines 4, 5 and 6 resumed activities shortly after the fire but Lines 1, 2 and 3, which were the most affected, are still closed.

Today, Fernando Espino, General Secretary of the Metro Workers Union, announced that subway’s Line 1 could resume its regular schedule next Monday, Jan. 25, reported El Heraldo de México. The Director-General of the Metro Collective Transport System, Florencia Serranía Soto, gave an update on the progress of the energy renovations being carried on Line 1. “We ran some tests yesterday and we have verified the availability of 85kV at the Buen Tono substation,” said Serranía, according to El Universal.

She praised the efforts made by CFE, engineers and technical staff that work for the subway and highlighted the telemetry program planned for Line 1. Developed back in 2019, this program will inform on the status of each and every single train on the line and retrieve information regarding speed, door conditions, engine condition and other parameters to evaluate the safety of the convoys, reports El Universal. Previously, this information was gathered from the train’s black box and its analysis required stopping the train, explained Serranía Soto.

Regarding Line 2, which connects Cuatro Caminos to Tasqueña, and Line 3, which connects Indios Verdes to Universidad, Espino informed that operations are expected to resume between the first and second week of February at 25 percent capacity, reports El Heraldo de México.
