The economic and personal hardships brought by COVID-19 shutdowns create the desire for instant recovery once confinement is over. This desire contemplates the national economy as a mechanism to be turned off and on with a light switch. The logistical and sanitary reality of Mexico’s economic reactivation, however, is one where authorities will need to be careful. Return to activities must be gradual to meet health standards that avoid risking a second COVID-19 wave.

A report from T21 states that over the weekend, Minister of Economy Graciela Márquez Colín announced in a press conference that the Ministry of Economy is currently collaborating with authorities from the Ministry of Health to draw up the specific programs and protocols through which certain “non-essential” companies and industries will be allowed to restart. Márquez Colín made it clear that this return to work would vary by state and by industry. More specifically, the protocols would have to be adapted to individual workplaces to guarantee that safe distances are maintained. Part of the coordination of these measures will be executed through the Ministry’s channels of communications with all industry chambers.

Additionally, Milenio reports that until these protocols are finalized, Márquez Colín redoubled the ministry’s commitment to supporting businesses through microcredits. She announced that 830,000 microcredits had been delivered to small and family businesses. 62 percent of these microcredits had gone to retail businesses, 19 percent had gone to factories and workshops and the remaining 19 percent had gone to businesses specialized in other types of services. States that received the most assistance were Baja California Sur, Colima and Queretaro.
