Mexico City's Minister of Mobility (SEMOVI) reported in 2019 that eight out of 10 people in Mexico use public transportation to move across the city with an average of 11.54 million trips per day. The country's capital city has become one of the largest live laboratories for mobility solutions including Urbvan, a Mexican start-up focused on shared transportation for both individuals and companies.

Urbvan just announced a partnership with Uber through which users of the ride-hailing app will be able to access routes offered by Urbvan. "Through technology, we are offering our users a transportation alternative with Urbvan’s high-capacity vehicles," said Miguel Rocha, Uber's COO in a statement.

Founded in 2016, Urbvan has been recognized as one of the Top 10 LinkedIn startups. Its app serves as a private transportation company that through its different routes connects the Mexico City metropolitan area, particularly bringing employees closer to their workplaces in Polanco, Santa Fe and Reforma areas. "We are a private transportation service that helps groups of people with a common route to get to their destination in a safer, more comfortable and more efficient way," says the company on its website.

Through its partnership with Urbvan, Uber is integrating its app as a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform by expanding the different options a user can take advantage of to get from one place to another. The company has also integrated Mexico City's public transportation system into its platform to support users. "Citizens are revaluating mobility costs and the importance of living in accessible cities that offer them different transportation options in a safe and efficient way," said Joao Albino, Founder of Urbvan.

Both companies aim to reduce the number of vehicles on the streets, while providing users with all the necessary health measures to prevent COVID-19 contagions. "All trips take into account safety and hygiene measures such as wearing a mask," said Rocha.

"Uber and Urbvan believe that joint efforts are fundamental to achieve more and better results that promote cities' development based on technology. Both companies will continue to innovate to favor mobility aiming to contribute to a more sustainable, trustable growth with greater benefits for everyone," said the companies in a statement.
