Alberta Premier Danielle Smith traveled to Mexico City this week to deepen ties with the country’s energy, manufacturing, and financial sectors, marking a sharp shift from her call last year to exclude Mexico from USMCA. Smith, whose province is Canada’s top oil producer, framed the visit as a bid to strengthen trade and energy cooperation.

In meetings with Mexican officials and Canadian companies operating in the country, Smith emphasized Alberta’s ability to export heavy crude and natural gas directly to Mexico for the first time, thanks to new Pacific Coast infrastructure, including the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline and LNG Canada’s northern British Columbia facilities. She argued that diversifying away from US markets is now a shared interest for both countries.

“Mexico seems to need a bit more supply security and different ways to receive LNG,” Smith said during an interview as reported by Bloomberg, adding Alberta could also supply heavy oil for diesel and aviation fuel production.

The trip follows high-level talks between Canadian officials and President Claudia Sheinbaum last week, and comes amid heightened US trade tensions under Donald Trump’s renewed economic agenda. Smith met with major industry players including TC Energy, PEMEX, Grupo Carso, and ATCO.
