The Mexican Association of Hydrocarbon Companies (AMEXHI) published a compendium of different social programs and collaborations spearheaded by hydrocarbons companies in the communities where they operate. “Contributing to the development of the more than 120 communities where the hydrocarbons industry operates in Mexico has become something more important than simply meeting a contractual requirement commitment: It is a mission that motivates AMEXHI members to leave a positive mark in the states where they have their areas of influence,” reads the publication.

The companies included in this compendium are BHP Mexico, Chevron, DS Servicios Petroleros, Eni, Hokchi Energy, Jaguar E&P, Petronas, Repsol, Shell, TotalEnergies and Wintershall Dea. Ever since they came to the Mexican market, the companies have deployed projects to support nearby communities. The goals of their programs are to promote the talent of people who want to join the energy sector, empower women and mothers to start their businesses or professionalize their skills, strengthen basic and health services, accelerate economic recovery, boost environmental conservation, protect endangered species and the preservation of cultural heritage, among others.

Rogelio Hernández Cázares, Commissioned President, AMEXHI, stated the importance of a balanced regulation to guide industrial development to the benefit of the country. “The impact of investments in the country's energy sector is not only measured in the number of barrels produced but also in the quality of life, community development and more and better opportunities for local businesses, which translates into tangible benefits for people.”

For instance, BHP created schools in Tampico and Tamaulipas to increase the quality of education in the community and to implement a better learning program for the students with innovative pedagogical tools and best practices. Chevron developed a social management program for the sustainable development of the coastal strip of the municipality of Paraiso, Tabasco, Mexico. With this program, the company plans to create strong ties with the community and help them develop plans for the use of their natural heritage to generate social and economic benefits.

“[Economic] development would be incomplete if it does not translate into the growth of the communities and a positive and sustainable impact of the industry's activities. This is how the Mexican legal framework enables development by including the social perspective, through instruments such as the payment for land use and a paid percentage of the income derived from projects that reach commercial production, as well as whether this is provided by the contract or assignment holders,” said Hernández.
