When we hear about problem-solving through algorithms and mathematical models, which allow machines to analyse large amounts of data, identify patterns, and make decisions based on that information, we easily associate it to engineering. When we mention the ability to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning and reasoning, we are talking about artificial intelligence. Let's analyze all this according to the following question: What will be the result of using AI as a tool in engineering?

The use of AI within engineering will allow us to achieve greater efficiency to focus on more strategic tasks and improve decision-making, since AI can analyze large amounts of data and provide valuable information for more informed and accurate decision-making. This will lead us to develop new products and more innovative services thanks to the ability to identify patterns that would be difficult to detect within a process, not to mention the cost reduction for companies as a result of optimizing processes and reducing errors. The benefits at first glance look promising; however, the use of AI within engineering represents major challenges, such as the need for quality data to function correctly – if the data is incomplete or inaccurate, the results of AI can be unreliable. Other challenges may be the development of algorithms suitable for each specific application, which requires specialized knowledge in AI and the engineering in question. These are generalized challenges;, however, integration into existing systems will also be a challenge technically and logistically, not to mention the ethical implications of using AI such as data privacy and liability in case of errors.

Globally, the impact of the use of AI has mainly benefited engineering fields such as electrical and electronic engineering to optimize energy distribution, predict network failures, and improve energy efficiency, in addition to the development of more intelligent and autonomous electronic devices; mechanical engineering with the design of more efficient products, optimization of production processes, and the performance of preventive maintenance on machinery, which are transforming the manufacturing industry., in addition to the development of more advanced and autonomous industrial robots. Civil engineering is not lagging behind, with the application of AI for the analysis of traffic, climate, and geological data as well as monitoring the condition of structures and predicting maintenance needs. Finally, industrial engineering has also benefited from the use of AI for the optimization of supply chain management, production planning, and logistics to help predict demand, optimize inventory, and improve process efficiency.

In Mexico, in addition to the aforementioned, the impact of using AI is also generating great relevance in engineering focused on the energy sector, analyzing how to enhance and optimize the production of oil and gas, as well as the management of renewable energies, and the prediction of failures in the power grid. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) provide real and current examples of the use of AI to manage the power grid and optimize electricity consumption, and improve the exploitation and production of hydrocarbons respectively.

Artificial intelligence is becoming an indispensable tool in engineering for its ability to optimize processes, improve decision-making, and strengthen innovation. A clear example of this innovation is being reflected in the transformation of the energy sector by offering solutions that optimize the production, distribution, and consumption of energy in an efficient way, promoting sustainability, which has taken on a crucial role in the global economy.
