Eni, the Italian oil giant that last year became the first international oil company to produce oil offshore in Mexico since the Energy Reform, donated medical supplies to the government of Tabasco to help in the fight against COVID-19. Among the supplies given to the government were 10 ventilators, 700 PCR test kits to detect 1,500 potential cases of COVID-19 and a thermal cycler used in the testing process. In addition, 3,900 food packages and cleaning kits for families in the Cardenas municipality were delivered.

“With this donation, the company joins the efforts of all health professionals and communities to help prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19, thus reaffirming its commitment and support to the communities where it operates, particularly the most vulnerable who are located in the coastal area of the municipality of Cardenas, Tabasco,” said the Italian company.

The donation was delivered by Eni Mexico’s Social Responsibility Manager Domenico Barranca and External Relations Manager Alfonso Solís and accepted by the state’s Minister of Health Silvia Guillermina Roldán Fernández on behalf of Governor Adán Augusto López Hernández. The minister thanked the Italian company for the donation and reminded Tabasqueños to keep their guard up. “Today we are in a better position but the fact that we have fewer cases and hospitalizations does not mean that the pandemic is over,” she said. As of Sept. 9, Tabasco had registered 29,601 positive COVID-19 cases, while Mexico’s count has risen to 647,507 total cases as of Sept. 11, according to the World Health Organization.

Eni’s activity in Mexico has been among the standout successes of the post-Energy Reform period. It has a 100 percent interest and operates Area 1, which includes the Amoca, Mitzon and Tecoalli discoveries located in the shallow waters off the coast of Tabasco. The company became the first international company to produce offshore, for which Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi was invited to meet Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico City.

At the start of this year, Eni announced the Saasken discovery on Block 10, located in the mid-deep waters of the Cuenca Salina basin, 65km off the Mexican coast. The discovery is believed to hold between 200MMboe and 300MMboe.

Other oil and gas companies have also joined in the fight against COVID-19. Among them was one of Mexico’s original offshore service companies, Grupo Protexa, which has been developing its own respirator that it intends to put into mass production once it receives approval from COFEPRIS.
