Q: What trends have you noticed developing in the industry in the past year?

MM: As we all know, the pandemic put a great deal on hold. With the return of CMP, however, business is certainly picking up again and there is a real sense of momentum. With production ramping up, well measuring is trending upward and as manufacturers, we are seeing companies requesting more  well testing services. The pandemic delayed manufacturing times and so, as an industry, we are working to get back up to speed.

Q: What are some of PetroHorus’ most sought-after services and which do you expect to grow in demand going forward?

CG: PetroHorus’ mission is to provide technological solutions for customers in the oil and gas industry. We offer market-leading solutions for multiphase metering, which is of prime importance for the industry. Ultimately, what you do not measure, you cannot control and, therefore, cannot improve. The industry is coming out of a hiatus, when commercial activities were put on hold. PetroHorus is re-assessing its traditional offerings to meet the evergreen needs of clients while also adapting and developing more high-tech and cost-effective solutions. By being more versatile, we can also be more objective in how we can improve our offering to better meet our clients' needs, and we have really carved out a niche in hydrocarbon measurement. PetroHorus sees itself as a technical arm that supports CNH. We seek to support this meta-objective of improved measuring and well optimization on a national level. The company also aims to support CNH’s well supervision efforts to ensure production remains efficient.

Q: What are some of the different types of measuring services PetroHorus offers and how do these services differ depending on the characteristics or terrain of a play?

CG: We specialize in measuring solutions for onshore services with our dynamic multiphase measuring equipment. By measuring the entire process system, the company also looks after the welfare of personnel and the environment. We are positioning ourselves as market-leading experts in conventional well measuring with our multiphase equipment and by continuing to build upon the experience we have already amassed. Conducting studies and analyses helps us identify how we can improve our measuring equipment. Our goal is to match international industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of our services, optimizing the functionality of our equipment and broadening the versatility of our offering. PetroHorus’ multiphase well measuring system tests wells in a linear manner and under stable conditions, without altering the wells. This is because our clients need to be assured their infrastructure remains intact so that their production can remain consistent.

Q: The company is involved in some PEMEX fields, such as EK-Balam, Ébano and Hokchi. How are these projects coming along and what other high-profile contracts have you signed?

CG: Ébano is a field known for producing extra-heavy crude and as such, our involvement in this project has allowed us to amplify our expertise regarding such challenges. We must be prepared to offer services and provide equipment that functions optimally in all conditions. We are always looking for new opportunities to allow us to grow, develop and find innovative solutions so we can be certain our products and services have no limitations.

The company is looking to expand into offshore services. With the latest technology we are developing, we hope to be able to provide well measuring services directly from offshore platforms soon. PetroHorus wants to diversify its portfolio while continuing to provide high-quality measurements with minimum levels of uncertainty, both onshore and offshore.

Q: What technological advancements have you been developing?

CG: We have just designed a new multiphase product with double separation of portal axles, which uses even more reliable Coriolis measurement instrumentation. This equipment, as well as being more efficient, is also more environmentally friendly since it does not require any of the radioactive sources that multiphase metering has traditionally relied upon.

With technology advancing and our own studies, we are changing the playing field for multiphase measuring of conventional wells. The company has also developed multiphase meters featuring fully nationally produced components and materials, which is a first in the market. Every single specialist, analyst and designer who we contract to manufacture our products is Mexican, as is PetroHorus’ own workforce.

Q: How does PetroHorus further demonstrate its ESG commitment by minimizing the environmental damage and fuel waste caused by flaring?

CG: We are a leading protagonist in the transformation of the industry to make better use of gas reserves and eliminate the use of ecological burners. The new equipment we are developing also eliminates the need to use metallic presses, precisely to minimize the environmental impact of our activity. Another technology the company is developing is a system in which measurements are carried out while allowing the energy produced to be captured and used to support peripheral operations. We hope to take advantage of the gas produced because of our meters to generate electricity for other processes. PetroHorus wants to become a national reference in the wider industry in terms of reducing ecological impact.

Q: How important is the well optimization of PEMEX's mature fields if Mexico is to meet its ambitious production targets and achieve energy sovereignty?

CG: It has been a target for some time now to increase production rates, but the investment levels from both PEMEX and private operators have been somewhat unbalanced. Strengthening PEMEX is important for the entire industry and all the different companies that work directly or indirectly with the NOC. Improving production in those fields is really a question of innovation, efficiency and economy. When developing new fields, we cannot lose sight of just how big an opportunity these resources represent for the nation and we must always consider the question of sustainability so as not to put short-term gains over long-term well performance.

Q: How is the company working to diversify its portfolio in preparation for an eventual green energy transition?

CG: We are seeking to consolidate ourselves as an energy company by looking for opportunities to expand into the growing mining industry. However, PetroHorus is also looking to diversify its portfolio within the oil and gas industry by expanding further into the downstream sector and providing services to refineries. The company takes sustainability very seriously and we are fully committed to supporting the national economy.

MM: We are actively developing more innovative solutions to play a leading role in the energy transition while promoting more environmentally friendly practices within the oil and gas sector.
