PEMEX has announced it is to invest US$ 2 billion in an attempt to reduce the amount of gas lost through flaring at Ixachi. The investment plan will comprise both PEMEX’s own resources as well as international credits for the refurbishment of the Papan Measurement and Control Station (EMC). This news comes after energy regulator CNH announced in May it was investigating the NOC for excessive flaring at the Ixachi field. As Reuters reported at the time, satellite data appeared to corroborate the claim that the area around Ixachi had become one of the world’s largest sites for gas flaring.

PEMEX has previously blamed its failure to properly maintain and refurbish its gas processing centers as one of the main reasons the hydrocarbon is released into the atmosphere. Ixachi, for example, still lacks crucial infrastructure to commercialize its abundant gas reserves. Heavy machinery has only just started clearing dense vegetation to allow for further construction.

The EMC station, which is nearing completion, will make better use of the natural gas and higher-value condensate produced at Ixachi to generate natural gas liquids, reducing methane gas emissions to the atmosphere. According to information released by PEMEX, the new station already has the capacity to manage both liquid hydrocarbons and treat and re-use congenital water.

These investments are aligned with PEMEX's broader commitment to reduce methane gas emissions in the exploration and production processes by up to 98 percent. PEMEX CEO Octavio Romero meanwhile assured that PEMX has already reduced the volume of gas flaring in the year by 44 percent. The Papan Measurement Station will be joined by the Ixachi Separation Battery, which once constructed will further boost the NOC’s compliance with ESG regulations. As Romero explained, PEMEX’s objective is to separate oil, gas and water as efficiently as possible after their extraction.

Ixachi, located 26km northeast of Tierra Blanca and 72km south of Heroica de Veracruz, has a total area of 740.55km². With 8 wells drilled and a total production of 24.7Mb/d, it represents one of PEMEX’s most promising assets and is sure to be one of the many hot topics discussed at next month’s Mexico Oil and Gas Summit as part of the Upstream Oil and Gas Outlook panel made-up of industry experts and major stakeholders.
