SENER reported that it has intensified its actions to combat fuel theft, also known as huachicol, while reaffirming the “success of the current public-oriented energy model.” During her appearance before the Senate and as part of the review of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first government report, Minister of Energy Luz Elena González detailed the steps taken to strengthen the battle against huachicol.

González explained that SENER is collaborating with other federal agencies, including the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO), to strengthen inspections of fuel storage sites and ensure compliance throughout the supply chain. She noted that recent regulatory reforms have made traceability mandatory for every segment of the value chain, enabling more effective monitoring and evidence gathering to combat illegal fuel trade. “We are providing solid information and legal elements that will allow stronger case building to combat this crime. The inclusion of traceability in every part of the value chain will help prevent these practices and ensure more transparent operations,” she told lawmakers.

The minister also underscored that SENER’s collaboration with the CEA, Profeco, and the gas retail sector has helped maintain stable fuel prices and curb illicit trade. “This coordinated work not only benefits consumers by stabilizing prices but also strengthens lawful businesses by reducing unfair competition from illegal fuel operations,” she added.
