Total jobs lost will reach 1 million. President López Obrador said the total jobs lost due to the pandemic will reach 1 million, and that a few more cuts are expected for June in the formal sector. From there, a “V-shaped” recovery process will start for the economy and jobs. “That is: we fell, and then we are going up again,” he noted while explaining the chart’s projection. The president said 550,000 jobs were lost in April and a further 345,000 jobs were lost in May, but that the economy will bottom out in June. From there, his administration has set a goal to create 2 million jobs in 2020, mostly through infrastructure projects such as the Mayan Train and the expansion of social programs.

Peaceful conscience can fight the pandemic. Besides social distancing, hygiene measures and healthy eating, a peaceful conscience can also have an impact on infections, President López Obrador said. “To be at peace with our conscience, not to lie, not to steal, not to betray. That helps a lot to prevent us from becoming sick with the coronavirus,” he said when asked how he is taking care of himself. Regarding the strategy implemented against the COVID-19 pandemic, the president warned against extending confinement. “It has been a long time, and people have made a great a sacrifice,” he said.

Explains “daily” deaths. President López Obrador explained that the figure of 1,092 deaths from COVID-19 reported at yesterday’s daily briefing was the result of an adjustment of previously unrecorded deaths. “It is a process of updating, but it does not mean that a thousand people died in one day,” he said and reiterated that, out of 30 countries, by population size Mexico ranks 18th for deaths. The president criticized media for highlighting this information. “It is very unfortunate that this happens at this time when professionalism and objectivity are required, regardless of our differences,” he said.

Rapid tests are valid. President López Obrador said local governments that want to apply COVID-19 “rapid tests” can do so. During his daily briefing in Chiapas, the president said that the federal approach is different, given that other tests are more appropriate.
