This Sunday, June 1, Mexico will experience a historic moment: for the first time, citizens will directly elect members of the Judiciary. A total of 881 federal judicial positions will be on the ballot. Voters will elect all Supreme Court justices — whose number will be reduced to nine — as well as members of the newly created Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal, which replaces the Federal Judiciary Council and will oversee the evaluation and investigation of judges' performance. Nearly half of the country’s 7,000 judges will also be chosen in this election, with the remainder set to be elected in 2027.
