Armed forces’ aid plan starts. The Navy and the DN-III plans to support the COVID-19 pandemic contingency will be starting today, President López Obrador announced. “We have been preparing this for a long time and today we are launching the Navy and the DN-III plans,” he said. The president explained that at first the plans will focus on Mexico City, State of Mexico, Quintana Roo, Baja California, Tabasco and Sinaloa. He also denied that the health infrastructure’s capacity to deal with the epidemic had been exceeded. Minister of National Defense (Sedena) Luis Cresencio Sandoval said the Mexican Army had converted all of its medical units and hospitals into COVID-19 care centers. “We have 117 centers across the republic,” he said.

Report on uncooperative companies. Minister of Labor (STPS) Luisa María Alcalde said 26 companies have refused to stop activities during the health contingency. Among the companies named were “Grupo Elektra in different parts of the country, with more than 10,000 workers. Also, Autofin in Mexico City, which is dedicated to the sale of vehicles. These are non-essential work centers that are refusing to close,” she said.

Investigation into deal by Bartlett’s son. After reports that the son of CFE head Manuel Bartlett sold ventilators to IMSS at above market prices, President López Obrador said the Public Function Ministry (SFP) must start an investigation. “From the beginning of my government I said I won’t tolerate any act of corruption, not even in my family,” he said.

Los Pinos will host health workers. Los Pinos Cultural Center will become a medical personnel shelter, IMSS head Zoé Robledo said. The venue that was used as a presidential residence for decades before becoming a cultural venue was adapted to house 80 health workers. “Today, 58 nurses working with COVID-19 patients in La Raza, 21st Century and Tlatelolco hospitals will have accommodation, food, a laundry area, recreational area, internet and transportation,” Robledo said.

Last push is needed. President López Obrador called on the population to give a “last push” in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, since in mid-May or early June a return to normal activities is very likely. The president insisted on following specialists’ recommendations.
