AIFA Flights/Investigation into the Murder of Priests

Murder of two priests. President López Obrador reported that from June 25 to June 28, 11 people close to José N, known as El Chueco, who allegedly murdered Jesuit priests Javier Campos Morales and Joaquín Mora Salazar, were arrested. “We take these acts of violence very seriously. For this reason, we have carried out several operations, in which we have arrested key people linked to El Chueco. Three of them are his relatives. We are looking for new leads that will lead to his arrest."

Last week, a man running from a hitman sought refuge at the church where the two Jesuit priests were working. When the hitman reached the precincts, he began firing and killed the two priests and the man. The suspect of killing the priests is apparently part of a criminal gang. Jesuit priests condemned the state of violence in the Sierra Tarahumara , where everyday men and women get murdered, mainly by criminal organizations.

Feminicide of Debanhi Escobar. Deputy Minister of Security Ricardo Mejia announced that today Nuevo León´s prosecutor office will request permission to exhume the body of Debahni Escobar, aiming to reach a consensus on the reasons for her death. “The Attorney General's Office in Nuevo León is asking the Judiciary for Escobar's exhumation. It is expected that between today and July 3, a group of specialists who are already in Monterrey will carry out the exhumation of the body.”

On April 21, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported that a body rescued from a water tank in Nuevo León matched the description of Escobar, the 18-year-old girl who disappeared on April 9. The Attorney General's Office autopsy exposed that Escobar's cause of death was due to an intracranial hemorrhage. It is believed that she drowned and did not experience sexual abuse. Nevertheless, the autopsy provided by the family confirmed that she died before falling into the water tank and that there were signs of sexual abuse.

AIFA will become the best airport in Mexico: AMLO. López Obrador assured that the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in the State of Mexico will have the best air terminal in the country. “It is already an airport that works very well operationally and soon it will be the best airport in Mexico. We are in the process of transitioning flights, but it takes time. We ask you to remain calm and ignore the smear campaigns against the AIFA."

The AIFA was inaugurated on March 21, 2022. However, it was highly criticized since its construction works, especially for its access, have remain unfinished. In addition, as the AIFA continues to have low occupancy in flights, the International Airport of Mexico City (AICM)’ saturation problem has not been resolved.  Previously, Vice Minister of Transportation Rogelio Pons announced that the government would publish a decree to reduce to 50 arrivals and departures per hour at the AICM so that the AIFA would have more flights. In addition, it was clarified that the airlines and the government have agreed to move 204 daily operations from the AICM to the AIFA. Starting in July, Aeroméxico will move between 30 routes and 60 operations to the AIFA, Volaris will move 20 routes and 40 operations, while Viva Aerobus will change 10 routes.
