Mexico is emerging from the fourth wave of COVID-19. Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell reported that the number of COVID-19 cases has dropped drastically throughout the country, suggesting Mexico is coming out of the fourth wave of infections. In addition, López-Gatell said that the country was less affected because virus containment strategies at the state and federal levels were improved, in addition to continuing with vaccinations. "The 32 states have reported a drastic reduction in cases. They have practically eliminated all cases and also with a very significant reduction in deaths. Soon we will come out of the fourth wave completely."

The Ministry of Health reported that 98 deaths and 4,832 infections were registered yesterday, which is the lowest figure since January. With these figures, the total number of infections is 5,418,257, while the death toll stands at 315,786. Regarding vaccinations, the ministry reported that 170,130,383 million doses have been administered, with 85,050, 217 million people vaccinated, representing 90 percent of the adult population.

AMLO asks people to ignore statements by Ted Cruz. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Republican US Sen. Ted Cruz is a meddling man who is creating uncertainty and discord in Mexico. As a result, he asked US and Mexican citizens to ignore Cruz’s statements and avoid supporting politicians who only create problems. “We have many friends in the US who see this man as a bad influence because he foments discord. American citizens should take that into account if this man wants to remain a senator or governor or even become president.”

Last week, Cruz asked US President Joe Biden to pressure López Obrador’s government to combat violence against journalists as the country was going through deep civil unrest, which would cause the collapse of civil society and the rule of law. For his part, Mexican Ambassador to the US Esteban Moctezuma said that he did not agree with Cruz's statement and invited him to learn about the root of the problems that exist throughout the region. In addition, he said that unlike Cruz, politicians in Mexico accept the results of elections, which reinforces the country's democracy. Therefore, he invited Cruz to take better care of the affairs in his own country. In the last US presidential election, Cruz supported former US President Donald Trump's claims of voter fraud. He also voted against certifying the election results.

AMLO accuses politicians of betraying the fourth transformation. López Obrador said that there are politicians like Sonora Sen. Lily Tellez who betrayed the fourth transformation despite the fact that MORENA was the party that invited them into the political sphere. “There are politicians, women and men, who had a chance with us but decided to betray us. I am to blame because I recommended their participation. This does not happen with humble people.” In addition, López Obrador said that Telléz defamed his image and that she wants to put him in jail but does not say why.

In 2017, López Obrador invited Téllez to run as a candidate for the Senate of Sonora for MORENA. Téllez accepted the offer but did not join the party. She ran alongside Alfonso Durazo as candidates of the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition, which won. Currently, Téllez is a member of the National Action Party, an opposition party, and has announced her intentions to run for president in the 2024 elections. Téllez stressed that her priority is to straighten the country’s path and imprison López Obrador and other politicians for having damaged the country's democracy. For instance, she says that López Obrador's insistence on knowing the income and personal data of journalist Carlos Loret de Mola is illegal and endangers his life.

AMLO: US financing of opposition parties is pathetic. López Obrador described as pathetic the US government’s financing of opposition groups, such as Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), which he says only seek to turn people against the Mexican government. In addition, López Obrador lamented that the US continues to use foreign policy that he calls “bad” and invades the sovereignty of other countries. “I am very sorry that the US government will not change its foreign policy and continues to practice the same policy of two centuries ago. This is applied to any part of the world when there is a leader or government that defends the interests of the people and does not submit to oligarchical domination. They always try to undermine and diminish it. That is what US media campaigns are for.”

López Obrador has frequently accused MCCI, a group that investigates political corruption, of seeking to destabilize his government with the help of the US, since its Agency for International Development funds it. Criticism from the MCCI has increased recently. Together with Latinus and Loret de Mola, they launched an investigation into López Obrador's son José Ramón López Obrador, whose life of luxury is contrary to López Obrador's austerity policy. In addition, the origin of his income is uncertain since he does not have an official job. Some believe that he uses government money, although such allegations have never been proven.
