COVID-19. Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell announced that, “we are experiencing a situation similar to April 2020, but instead of going up, we are going down” in terms of new cases of coronavirus. López-Gatell also said that more than a fifth of the population that is eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine had been vaccinated. “We have vaccinated 18.6 million people, representing 21 percent, more than a fifth of the population eligible to be vaccinated, which at this time is the adult population.”

AstraZeneca for Latin America. The head of COFEPRIS, Alejandro Svarch, said that expectations are that the country will release the first four batches of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine packaged in Mexico this week. These vaccines will be distributed in Mexico and throughout Latin America. “On the weekend, Mexico will receive 800,000 doses and Argentina the other 800,000; the plant will be supplying Argentina and Mexico and other countries in Latin America that signed contracts with AstraZeneca,” Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said. Ebrard added that through these agreements, Mexico seeks to ensure the region has its own production while generating global solidarity and guaranteeing equitable access to vaccines.

Teacher vaccinations. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that vaccinations against COVID-19 for teachers in Chihuahua and Puebla would begin this week, completing the vaccination of all teachers across the country. Delfina Gómez, minister of public education, said that 2,564,506 teaching staff had been vaccinated nationally.

Carlos Slim collaboration. López Obrador publicly thanked billionaire Carlos Slim for helping governments comply with the processes and times to have safe and effective vaccines. He specified that the Carlos Slim Foundation contributed financing for the vaccine, and promoted its activation, packaging and distribution to different countries.

Delivery of cards prior to elections. The president mentioned that the delivery of “support cards” prior to this year’s elections is reckless and an untimely action. The cards are meant to be for buying and acquiring services in local establishments in order to support the economy. “It may be legal, but I consider that it is reckless, it is not appropriate to be handing over these cards on the eve of the elections. Hopefully, it is suspended. It is an exhortation of goodwill because it may be legal, but no card should be delivered at this time, wait for the elections to pass and not go house to house to deliver cards of this type.”

Campaign against Morena. López Obrador said there was a political campaign against Morena, López Obrador’s party, to prevent the party from obtaining a majority in the Chamber of Deputies during the legislative elections on June 6. “I am not going to judge, only to say that there is a political strategy against us so that the transformation movement does not gain a majority in the Chamber of Deputies. They have grouped together for that purpose.”
