Call With Trump. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that her morning press conference began an hour later than usual due to a telephone call she had with US President Donald Trump this morning. She detailed that their conversation addressed trade and tariffs, though no specific agreements were finalized. Regarding specific industries, Sheinbaum noted Mexico's very preferential situation in the automotive sector and mentioned that work continues on steel and aluminum issues.
Sheinbaum also announced that Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard will travel to Washington on May 23, 2024. He will meet with United States authorities to discuss trade topics.
Tax on Remittances to Mexico. President Sheinbaum highlighted that efforts by the Mexican government have led to an interim reduction in a proposed United States remittance tax, with the rate decreasing from 5% to 3.5%. This occurred after the proposal was included in the US Congressional budget. She affirmed that while this decrease is a noteworthy step, work will continue to eliminate the proposed tax.
Meeting With Steel and Concrete Producers. President Sheinbaum revealed the primary purpose of her meeting on May 21, 2025, at Palacio Nacional with steel and concrete manufacturers. She stated that the meeting aimed to secure a preferential pricing agreement for materials intended for the National Well-Being Housing Program.
Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of these government purchases and affirmed that the housing is for those most in need. She also emphasized that to offer accessible housing prices, it is necessary that domestic prices for steel and aluminum do not increase.
