CFE workers murdered in Sonora. President López Obrador said that the attack against CFE workers is already being investigated. The president extended his condolences to the families of the workers that were murdered in an attack of armed civilians in Sonora. On Sept. 6, two CFE employees were killed and two were hurt. The workers were carrying out repairs to solve issues in the energy supply network that affect towns in the northeast of the country. State authorities accuse the criminal group “La Línea” for the attack.

National Guard reform. López Obrador said that his National Guard reform to make this body fully depend on the Ministry of Defense (SEDENA) is not a way to militarize the country nor declare war to organized crime. The objective of the reform is to restructure the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). Nonetheless, the reform still has to be approved by the Senate.

With this reform, SSPC will no longer be involved in the field of public security. Its mission will be instead to prevent crime and to coordinate actions to avoid torture.

Preventive jail time. President López Obrador expressed that eliminating preventive jail time would be affect all Mexicans and that it would be a step back in legality in the country.

Today, the debate about preventive jail time will continue for the third consecutive session at the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN). This mandatory legal framework puts alleged criminals immediately in jail for certain serious crimes. Deputy Minister of Security Ricardo Mejía Berdeja said that if preventive jail time is eliminated, it would be up to a judge to decide the sentence of those arrested, which could lead up to more corruption.

After a judge decided that José Bernabé, accused of being the main violence generator in the state of Colima, would not be processed, Mejía Berdeja pointed out the importance of preventive jail. Berdeja explained that preventive jail time operates automatically and is not arbitrary. When attribution to a crime like feminicide, homicide, rape or organized crime is proven, at that moment prison time is properly defined. The Mexican government asked the Supreme Court of Justice to keep preventive jail, claiming that it is fundamental for some crimes and ensures that criminals do not evade justice during the criminal trial.

32 people arrested for the murder of journalists. Berdeja also informed that there are currently 32 people arrested as suspects in the murder of journalists and 24 are being processed. So far, there have been 13 journalist homicides in 2022, nine of them killed for their journalistic work.
