Claudia Sheinbaum Elected President. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated that MORENA candidate Claudia Sheinbaum became the new president of Mexico and assured that Mexico is in good hands. "We spoke yesterday and I congratulated her, because imagine what it means to hand over the presidency to a woman after 200 years of only men governing Mexico. She is the most voted candidate in Mexico's history. It is something historic," said the president.

INE announced that Sheinbaum secured between 58.6% and 60.7% of the votes, making her the most-voted candidate in Mexico's recent history. Xóchitl Gálvez, from Fuerza y Corazón por México, came in second with 26.6% to 28.6% of the votes, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez from Movimiento Ciudadano placed third with 9.9% to 10.8% of the votes. In her victory speech, Sheinbaum thanked Gálvez and Máynez for recognizing her victory in the 2024 elections, as well as for their participation in the elections.

Ayotzinapa. President López Obrador stressed that, as promised, he will have a private meeting with the relatives of the 43 missing students. He explained that, due to the electoral ban, he could not hold the meeting last week.

In 2014, during former President Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration, 43 students disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero. The government reported they were murdered by the United Warriors Cartel in Cocula. However, information showed that the Iguala police and army handed over the students to the criminal group. The Truth Commission of the Ayotzinapa case reported that there was an infiltrated soldier among the students, but Former Army General Salvador Cienfuegos assured that the army was not involved. Since then, numerous protests have been held to demand accountability.

In March, López Obrador called on the relatives of the Ayotzinapa students to dialogue peacefully, after the door of the National Palace was forcibly taken by a group of protesters who wanted to speak with the president during his morning conference.

Judicial Power Reform. López Obrador stated that since MORENA won the majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies and Senators, the reform to the Judicial Power needs to be debated again.

President López Obrador has promoted a reform to the Judicial Power so that ministers, magistrates and judges are elected by popular vote. The president emphasized that due to time limitations in the Legislative Branch, he will not be able to see his initiative materialize. For this reason, he said that in the next elections he will have to rely on his so-called "Plan C", which consists of waiting for the next president to continue promoting the reform.
