Claudia Sheinbaum Revives López Obrador’s Unfinished Reforms

Of the 20 initiatives introduced by former President López Obrador, three were declared void under legislative regulations. However, President Claudia Sheinbaum has committed to reviving two proposals: prohibiting the cultivation of genetically modified corn and enacting electoral reform.

Sheinbaum to Present 20 Legislative Proposals in 2025

President Claudia Sheinbaum is preparing a package of nearly 20 legislative proposals to present to Congress during the next regular session, which begins on March 1. The package includes drafting secondary laws required to implement the constitutional reforms approved in 2024 and revising the Law of the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers.

Digital Platform Workers' Labor Reform Now Published

On Dec. 24, the reform aimed at enhancing labor rights for digital platform workers was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF). The new regulations are set to take effect in June 2025 and are projected to provide full social security coverage and benefits to approximately 272,000 of the 658,000 delivery workers and drivers in Mexico.

Biden’s Final Year: 190,491 Mexican Migrant Repatriation

In the final year of Joe Biden’s presidency, 190,491 Mexican migrants were repatriated, with 8% returning via the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). According to the National Institute of Migration (INM), between January and November 2024, an average of 570 Mexican nationals were repatriated daily from the United States. This figure reflects a decrease from the 588 daily repatriations recorded in 2023.

Donald Trump Loses Appeal in US$5 Million Defamation Case

A federal appeals court has upheld a US$5 million ruling against Donald Trump, confirming that the president-elect of the United States is liable for sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll, a former Elle magazine columnist. The ruling, issued by a three-judge panel from the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan, represents a significant legal setback for Trump amidst his return to the White House.
