A warning if COVID-19 bounces back. It is necessary to resume productive activities, but if a new COVID-19 outbreak happens then the government will again impose confinement measures, President López Obrador said. “If we abide by health and safety measures, then little by little we are going to return to normal. If we do not do it with discipline and infection rates increase, then we will close again,” he said. The president highlighted the importance of resuming productive activities for both the national and popular economies, and said that if stricter confinement and social distancing measures are needed, those will rely on the people’s accountability.

Satisfied with his administration. President López Obrador said he was satisfied with his government’s achievements after 18 months in office. “I am satisfied with what has been achieved, despite the adversity from the transformation the country is experiencing,” he said in his daily briefing in Quintana Roo, during his first public act outside the National Palace in weeks. The president is expected to “drop the flag” on works for the Mayan Train in two states and also visit PEMEX refineries in the coming weeks.

National tourism, the summer target. Minister of Tourism Miguel Torruco detailed the strategy for the sector and said national tourists will be the target for the summer season, while foreign visitors, mostly from the US and Canada, are expected to return during the winter. Quintana Roo Gov. Carlos Joaquín González said the state is working on a plan aligned with the national strategy to restart essential tourism activities in a gradual and orderly manner. “Cancun and the Caribbean are the first in the Americas to receive global security from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC),” Joaquín said.

Possible buyer for presidential plane. A proposal for the sale of the presidential plane is being analyzed, President López Obrador said. He noted that the aircraft has not been flown yet to Mexico because there is a possible buyer in the US, and that the transaction might be completed half in cash and half in medical equipment. Apart from this offering, the president said tickets are still being sold for the so-called “plane raffle” on Sept. 16.
