Constitute a New Class/Rise in Violence

By Sofía Hanna | Mon, 06/21/2021 - 12:01

New middle class. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said his government is trying to get millions of Mexicans out of poverty in order to build a new type of middle class. “Yes we want a middle class, of course, we want to get millions of Mexicans out of poverty to constitute a new middle class that is more humane, more fraternal, more supportive. All of this to lift Mexicans out of poverty, to improve their working life conditions but also to continue looking at the dispossessed, the needy and the marginalized.” He also commented that it is incredible to him that this sector supports corrupt governments and that, “those who do not want to be changed will maintain their status quo; meaning a regime of corruption, injustice and oppression of privileges.”

Mexican national guard. The commander of the National Guard, Luis Rodríguez Bucio, said that there are 84 barracks under construction and that the Guard hopes to end the year with 284. He also mentioned that during the 2021 elections, the National Guard provided protection to six candidates for governor, 51 for municipal president and 56 for deputy for a total of 113 candidates.

Most violent month. Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Minister of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported that there were 2,963 homicides in May, making it the most violent month in 2021 and one of the 10 bloodiest of López’s Obrador’s six-year term. On the other hand, she said the country saw an annual reduction of 2.9 percent in the number of intentional homicides in the first five months of the year.

Murder in Reynosa. López Obrador lamented the murder of 14 civilians in Reynosa and asked the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to initiate a thorough investigation. “It is a cowardly attack that took the lives of innocent people. We send our condolences to the next of kin and I have asked the legal counsel to make arrangements with the FGR so that the case is brought up and a thorough investigation is initiated to find out the reasons and punish those responsible.”
