Priority for vaccine is healthcare workers. Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López Gatell said that the Pfitzer vaccine will arrive in Mexico in the third week of December and the vaccination plan is expected to start a few days later. The authorities assured the vaccine will be available to all Mexicans. However, the first vaccines will be given to healthcare workers due to their high risk of infection.

The next priority group will be people older than 80 years, followed by adults between 70-79 years; people between 60-69 years; adults between 50-59; people between 40-49; and finally, the population under 40. President López Obrador emphasized that he would wait his turn to be vaccinated. “I will wait for my turn with the fourth group. Those who are taking care of patients, must be vaccinated first because they are heroes who risk their lives to save other people’s lives,” he said. The plan aims to vaccinate all Mexicans before the end of 2021.

COVID-19 vaccine will reach the most remote communities. AMLO assured that the vaccine would be available in every community in the country. The government will be working with different vaccines to cover the national demand. It was reported that through the COVAX mechanism, Mexico has already agreed to purchase more than 50 million vaccine doses from nine different vaccine projects. In addition, Mexico could have access to the COVAXII portfolio, which has another nine vaccine candidates. AMLO said that the government does not have financial problems; therefore, all Mexicans will be vaccinated next year.

García Luna’s extradition process will take time. Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard said the extradition process for Genaro García Luna will be longer due to García Luna’s right to defend himself. However, the Mexican authorities will be awaiting the judge’s decision, said Ebrard. On Monday, Mexican officials confirmed the country made a request to the US for the extradition of García Luna, the top cop in former President Felipe Caldéron’s administration. García Luna has pleaded not guilty in the US on drug trafficking charges.

Vaccine not essential for return to school. Although taking the COVID-19 vaccine will not be for students to return to school, López Gatell said that it would help to reduce the risk of infections. He added that the government is considering new health security protocols for schools.
