By Sofía Hanna | Mon, 03/01/2021 - 11:54

In Favor of Democracy. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that 25 governors, including the Head of Government of Mexico City, have signed the “National Pact for Democracy” and that many more may join. The agreement calls on governors to remain neutral in the June elections, which López Obrador said had become relevant to “establish once and for all a truly democratic state ... no more electoral fraud.”

Murders in Jalisco. Regarding the 11 people murdered in Jalisco, the president said that it is reminiscent of a previous time and that the government would work to improve security in affected regions. “It is a theme from long ago, when an organized crime group predominated, and we are helping to calm Jalisco, Michoacan, Guanajuato and Zacatecas. Yesterday, I was there and they told me that in these four states the number of homicides has increased.” AMLO also mentioned that as a way to support the region in terms of security, the presence of the National Guard, army and navy will be reinforced in these states. On Saturday, gunmen riding in a truck opened fire, killing 11 people who were attending a party.

Call with Biden. AMLO mentioned that during a previous call with US President Joe Biden, the two leaders clarified that Mexico is not the backyard of the US. “I thanked him for having that perception because Mexico is a free, independent, sovereign country, we do not get involved in matters that have to do with the citizens of the United States because we do not want any country in the world to intervene in matters that concern only Mexicans.” Today, the president will have another call with Biden to discuss relations with the US, COVID-19, migration, security, climate change and the USMCA trade deal.

Governor of Tamaulipas. The president stated that he had asked the Chamber of Deputies to disclose the file of Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, governor of Tamaulipas. “Be transparent because I do not know the file, I do not make files or give orders to make files against anyone.” García, a former director of state oil company PEMEX, has been accused of taking bribes to support the Energy Reform in 2013 and 2014.

Ministers Infected with COVID-19. Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell and the heads of the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) and the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) have been infected with COVID-19. However, President López Obrador announced that they are out of danger. “Already in recovery, in the final stage, but they are well. I celebrate that they are well and we send them a solidarity hug. If it is post-COVID, the body takes time to recover because it is like a hurricane passing.”
