Crime in Mexico. Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodríguez said that in the first 10 months of the year, Mexico saw a decrease in the number of crimes under federal jurisdiction compared to the same period in 2019. She also said that the number of victims of intentional homicides fell 3.9 percent and that plans are still being implemented to reduce the number in 50 priority municipalities. In general, crime in Mexico has dropped, with the exception of extortion, rape, transport theft and pickpocketing, which have presented an upward trend in the last month.
Defending electricity reform. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that during his meeting in Washington last week with the heads of Canada and the US, he addressed the electricity reform issue, explaining the reasons for promoting the initiative. “I explained to them how (private companies) had looted the country, and it allowed me to inform them so that our actions would not be misinterpreted. The meeting was very good for that reason. I told them that the privatization of oil had delivered 110 concessions and only two were investing and the rest had been used to speculate,” said López Obrador. He also commented that the possibility of cooperation to modernize hydroelectric plants in Mexico was explored with Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau through an agreement with a public company in Canada. López Obrador added that he clarified that “we have no conflicts in the mining sector.” Overall, López Obrador said it had been “a very good visit to Washington.” López Obrador met with Trudeau and US President Joe Biden in the first summit among the three countries in six years.
Jorge Alcocer rumors. López Obrador denied that Minister of Health Jorge Alcocer will be leaving his post. “Dr. Alcocer's retirement was a rumor. We are very happy with the performance of Dr. Jorge Alcocer. He is a wise, upright, honest, sensitive, human man. I do not believe that there has been such a Secretary of Health, perhaps before but not that I remember. (He is a) National Science Award (winner), but above all a very human, honest person. Imagine, how are we going to (replace him)?”
