Judicial Ruling on Meta / Universal Scholarship Coverage

Launch of the 2026 Academic Year. President Claudia Sheinbaum led the official opening of the 2026 school year from Secondary School No. 10 Artes Graficas, marking the return of over 28 million basic education students nationwide. Sheinbaum emphasized collaborative efforts among teachers, parents, and students to address educational challenges throughout the school cycle.

Universal Scholarship Coverage. Minister of Public Education Mario Delgado announced that universal scholarship coverage has been achieved for primary, secondary, and upper secondary students nationwide, benefiting nearly 10 million public primary school pupils through the Rita Zetina Scholarship. Delgado introduced the ABC de las Emociones (ABC of Emotions) program, establishing a mandatory weekly one-hour pedagogical module in secondary and high schools focused on student mental health and emotional awareness.

Mental Health and Emotional Education Programs. Tania Rodríguez, Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Ministry of Public Education (SEP), presented complementary emotional well-being initiatives within the Nueva Escuela Mexicana (New Mexican School) framework. Rodríguez announced that the ABC of Emotions Day will take place on Sep. 23, 2026, featuring visits by public servants to schools across Mexico City to facilitate dialogue and emotional expression.

Results on Classroom Mobile Device Regulations. Delgado released survey findings from over 565,000 teachers regarding digital device regulations in classrooms. Delgado reported that 82.1% of educators support establishing clear rules for technological use, with smartphones identified as the primary distraction by nearly 40% of teachers, while 38.7% of respondents noted that social media disputes directly impact school environments.

Judicial Ruling on Meta Platforms. President Sheinbaum referenced a US legal ruling against Meta Platforms, highlighting that the company acknowledged deliberate algorithm designs intended to generate digital addiction among minors. Sheinbaum affirmed that the outcome reinforces federal plans to regulate mobile phone usage within educational institutions and protect youth from harmful digital content.
