KIA Expansion in Nuevo Leon / Extortion in Quintana Roo

KIA Expansion in Nuevo Leon. Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard announced a US$649 million investment by KIA Mexico to expand its manufacturing facility in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon. Ebrard noted that the expansion will support the assembly of the electric Kia EV3 model starting Aug. 4, 2026, generating 500 jobs this year and 1,500 additional direct jobs between 2027 and 2030, with initial domestic content reaching nearly 27%. Horacio Chávez, Commercial Director, KIA Mexico, and Young Sam Kim, President, KIA Mexico, confirmed the model will mark the company's first electric vehicle (EV) assembled and sold domestically.

US Section 301 Tariffs on Mexico. Ebrard detailed Mexico's trade standing under the USMCA, noting that approximately 85% of Mexican exports enter the US duty-free. Ebrard highlighted that recent US Section 301 trade reviews left tariffs on Mexican exports unchanged, while noting that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer recently visited Mexico for bilateral reviews.

Housing Development in Puebla. Minister of Agrarian, Land, and Urban Development Edna Vega led the ceremony for a residential project supported by the Housing Fund of the Social Security and Services Institute for State Workers (FOVISSSTE) in Puebla. Vega stated that the national housing policy has expanded across 20 states, achieving 30% progress toward its national target of 70,000 homes via joint efforts with the Workers' National Housing Fund Institute (INFONAVIT) and the National Housing Commission (CONAVI).

Extortion Complaints in Quintana Roo. President Sheinbaum called on business owners in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, to report extortion and municipal corruption complaints directly to the federal security cabinet. Sheinbaum's statement follows a Milenio report on public allegations concerning municipal urban development director William Conrado Alarcón.

Progress on Diplomatic Relations With Peru. President Sheinbaum announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) maintains diplomatic communications with the government of President Keiko Fujimori in Peru. Sheinbaum stated that SRE is negotiating safe-conduct authorization for a person sheltered in the Mexican embassy in Lima, currently protected under Brazilian administration, to relocate to Mexico. Sheinbaum stressed that in any scenario, the rupture of diplomatic relations is off the table. 

UNAM Entrance Exam Review Procedures. President Sheinbaum addressed concerns regarding the integration of AI tools during the undergraduate entrance examination process at UNAM. Sheinbaum stated that institutional administration must resolve technical discrepancies quickly to provide operational certainty for all applicants.
