Meeting With Canadian Business Leaders. President Claudia Sheinbaum described her meeting with Canadian business leaders and officials as constructive, highlighting talks focused on investment prospects and environmental responsibilities. She also pointed out concerns regarding Canadian mining companies that concluded operations without completing the necessary environmental restoration measures.

“Since the prime minister’s visit, we raised the issue of Canadian companies that have not completed environmental remediation after closing mining operations. I personally addressed the matter, and we also discussed other investments. It was a very positive meeting,” she said.

US Tariff on Steel and Aluminum. Sheinbaum commented on reports that the United States could ease tariffs on steel and aluminum, which currently apply to both primary metals and related products. She said the possibility has been raised in conversations with Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard, although no firm decision has been announced. She added that the measures pose significant difficulties and that lowering them would be welcome.

Energy Sovereignty Strategy Focused on Renewables and Domestic Gas. Sheinbaum presented her government’s strategy to enhance energy sovereignty by increasing renewable energy capacity and lowering reliance on imported natural gas. 

The plan focuses on expanding solar, wind and geothermal power, with an emphasis on community participation and local benefits. Under the proposal, renewable sources are projected to raise their share of electricity generation by 15% to 20% during her administration.

Humanitarian Aid to Cuba. The president called on the international community to increase humanitarian assistance to Cuba. She affirmed that Mexico will continue providing support to the Cuban people and emphasized the country’s tradition of solidarity with nations in need.
