Mexico City infection in peak phase until May 20. President López Obrador said the peak for the COVID-19 infection in Mexico City could last until May 20. “At last night’s health meeting, we agreed that Mexico City is in the phase of greatest contagion. We are at the peak and it could last until May 20,” he said. The president explained that according to specialists, infections would begin to decrease after that. He asked that people strengthen their discipline to comply with all recommendations in this stage of the pandemic.

Mexico joins international effort. Mexico is participating in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, funding researchers with €1 million to be invested in the first phase of the protocol, Minister of Foreign Affairs (SRE) Marcelo Ebrard said. “Our contribution in joining the team is €1 million. We will make further contributions later,” he stated. Ebrard also said that Mexico has already established contact with the US laboratory that developed Remdesivir, the drug that is being approved for use against COVID-19. The goal is to have timely access to the medication once it is available.

Pandemic lessons for the world. President López Obrador presented his conclusions on the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic in a document that will be translated into several languages. Strengthen public health systems, address the problem of chronic diseases, promote fraternity and avoid hoarding are among his observations on health. “The UN and the WHO must summon governments and scientists at once to create vaccines,” the document states. Regarding economics, the president called on countries to abandon models that generate wealth without well-being and to allow the state the possibility for greater intervention to temper social inequalities. The president also called on organizations such as the World Bank, the IMF, the IDB, the OECD and the G-20 to become true promoters of cooperation for development and well-being.

Fast and Furious report. After former President Felipe Calderón said he was unaware of all the actions implemented in the Fast and Furious operation during his administration, President López Obrador said Mexico will send a diplomatic request to the US for a report on the raid where US authorities entered Mexico with weapons. “Given the good relationship with the United States, I don’t see any obstacle in gaining this information,” the president said.
