The American Society and the Ministry of Tourism shared the most relevant data regarding tourism achievements during this presidency, as well as the expectations for the final stretch of the administration, along with the benefits of incorporating and embracing refugees into the Mexican economy, during the American Society Monthly Breakfast.

According to Miguel Torruco, Minister of Tourism, the transformation of the tourism sector led to significant works and projects that would boost the industry’s position. During the past administration, Mexico ranked seventh in terms of domestic tourism, 17th place in foreign exchange earnings and 40th in per capita spending. COVID-19 delayed projects and initiatives that were planned for this administration, but Torruco commented that much more was achieved than expected.

According to current data, Mexico expects to close 2023 with US$31.169 billion obtained from tourism activities, representing an 11.3% increase over 2022. The country expects to receive 39.4 million tourists, which is 2.7% more than in 2022 and only 12.6% less than in 2019. Of these tourists, 21.41 million are expected to arrive by air, which is 161,353 tourists more than in 2022. This is expected to generate income of US$25.231 billion, 7% more than in 2022 and 28.3% above the level of 2019, according to the data presented by the Minister.

The event also featured Hamdi Ulukaya, CEO, Chobani, and Gideon Maltz, CEO, TENT Partnership for Refugees, who talked about how, with more and more refugees displaced for long periods, businesses have a critical role in helping refugees integrate economically into their new communities. “How do we change a problem into an opportunity? Refugees are not a problem; they move because of a problem. Because of the journey they have gone through, they are excited about the life they can bring again,” stated Ulukaya.

Currently, TENT is looking to collaborate with Mexican companies to benefit both sides of the equation. Hiring refugees into companies can help the latter and by doing so, companies are also aiding these groups in need to start over and provide for their families.

Regarding business, refugees can bring diversity, new skills and experience to the workforce. Employees have proven to be more loyal to the companies where they work and to add value to consumers as they increasingly expect brands to reflect their values and act with integrity. “By supporting refugees, brands can build consumer loyalty and drive sales,” said Maltz.
