Mexico-Peru Ties Restoration / Cultural Property Repatriation

Cultural Property Repatriation. Minister of Culture Claudia Curiel reported that the Ministry of Culture has recovered 17,878 archaeological, historical, and ethnographic items since October 2024, with 3,716 cultural artifacts repatriated during the current administration. 

Teotihuacan Museum Reopening. Curiel also announced the public reopening of the Site Museum at the Teotihuacan Archaeological Zone following a 20-year closure, utilizing a total capital investment of MX$7 million (US$400,000) for architectural and museographical restoration to exhibit a collection where 90% of the artifacts have never been previously displayed.

Mexico-Peru Diplomatic Reengagement. President Sheinbaum welcomed the formal statement from the President-elect of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, indicating an intent to restore bilateral relations with Mexico. Sheinbaum instructed Minister of Foreign Affairs Roberto Velasco to initiate formal communications with the incoming Peruvian administrative team to establish the specific institutional parameters and protocols for the resumption of diplomatic ties.
