Since Donald Trump began his second term as US president, Mexico has received a total of 10,964 deported migrants from the United States. Of these, 8,425 were Mexican nationals, while 2,539 were from other countries, some of whom have been assisted in returning to their countries of origin.

"Flights have been dispatched from Mexico to Honduras; one departed yesterday, and some deported individuals are also being transported by land. If they wish, we provide assistance to help them return to their countries of origin," Sheinbaum said.

Since Trump’s return to office on Jan. 20, the Mexican government has faced increasing pressure from the US administration's threats to impose tariffs on Mexican exports unless the flow of migrants and drugs, particularly fentanyl, is effectively curtailed. In response, the Mexican government announced the deployment of 10,000 National Guard members to the northern border to combat drug trafficking.

This is not the first time Mexico has strengthened its border enforcement. In 2019, the Mexican government deployed National Guard units to manage migrant flows. That June, both countries signed a joint declaration in which Mexico committed to enhancing law enforcement efforts to curb irregular migration. As part of this agreement, at least 27,000 National Guard members were stationed at both borders, leading to a 46% reduction in migrant flows. When Trump first threatened tariffs in May 2019, there were 144,110 migrant encounters at the Mexico-US border. By the end of his administration in January 2021, that number had decreased to 78,410.

Under the presidency of López Obrador (2018-2024), Mexico consistently received up to 6,500 deported migrants per week from the United States. Similarly, during Joe Biden's administration, deportation flights continued regularly, culminating in a 10-year high of 270,000 deportations in 2024. Over his four-year term, Biden's administration carried out 1.5 million deportations, closely aligning with the 1.5 million deportations recorded during Trump’s first term.
