National Guard to monitor metro. President López Obrador lashed out against the organizations criticizing the presence of the National Guard (GN) in the Collective Transport System (STC) metro after last week’s train crash in Line 3.

The president said the GN´s duty is to protect the people from harm and avoid major tragedies from happening. Nonetheless, the Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) published a report showing that there are no reports that the accidents have been intentionally caused. Moreover, metro users agree with claims from members of the National Union of Subway workers that say the problem is the lack of maintenance, materials and equipment in the subway’s system.

The deployment of approximately 6,000 elements of the GN in Mexico City’s metro raised concerns among opposition´s civil and political leaders which have accused the government of militarizing the public transport system. The controversy started when Mexico City’s Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced the GN would be providing support to the metro system after the deadly crash that left one teenager dead.

AMLO is planning a South America tour in September. President López Obrador plans to visit Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

During his morning conference, López Obrador said that Colombia’s president invited him to visit his country and that is the reason why he is considering visiting South America. Moreover, the president said he would like to visit Argentina and Brazil. But due to recent conflicts in those countries, especially Brazil , he said would wait until President Lula visits Mexico.
