Negotiate with opposition. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ruled out any negotiation on the 2022 Budget with the opposition in Congress in exchange for passing the Electricity Reform. “You cannot take resources away from the people, nor can you stop the development of the country to benefit minorities,” said the president. López Obrador pointed out that the country needs to be transformed, which is why changes cannot be made to the 2022 Budget. “The country needs to be transformed. (We cannot) provide a truce in the fight against corruption, which is the country’s main problem,” he said.

UNAM. López Obrador commented once again on the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), pointing out that its faculty “were filled with conservatives.” This is the third consecutive morning conference in which this criticism has been made. This time, López Obrador said that the UNAM “went right” during the neoliberal period, including during the period of the former rector and today Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations Juan Ramón de la Fuente.

Meeting with UN. López Obrador announced that during his next trip to New York, he will only visit the United Nations (UN) headquarters and that he will take the opportunity to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “I am going to the UN Security Council and I am going to meet with the secretary-general. I have no other activity. I arrive on the night of the eighth very early, at 1 a.m. and in the afternoon, I return to Mexico. I’m just going to do that: preside over the Security Council.”

Violence in Tulum. After the fatal shooting of two women last week in Tulum, López Obrador said he regretted what happened and the death of the women. “What happened in Tulum is very unfortunate. The investigation is already being carried out: it was a confrontation between two groups, that is what is known. The alleged perpetrators have already been identified. I hope they will be arrested soon. Those responsible will be punished.” He said that security would be reinforced throughout the Riviera Maya with the presence of more elements of the National Guard.
