Stopping drug traffickers. After the US offered rewards for those who offer information to help capture several important Mexican drug traffickers, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that if the criminals are on Mexican territory, his government is responsible for arresting them and he will not allow any foreign force to act in the country. “It is a list of alleged criminals in the sale and trafficking of drugs, in this case, it has to do with synthetic drugs, fentanyl. The United States government is concerned because many Americans have lost their lives, more than 100,000 per year, because of the consumption of these drugs. For this reason, they made this decision, there has not been more than that,” López Obrador said. Among the drug traffickers listed are Ismael “El Mayo” Zamabada, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes “El Mencho,” as well as the children of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán: Ovidio, Iván, Jesús, Alfredo and Joaquín Guzmán.
Liberation of Ovidio Guzmán. López Obrador reiterated that it was his decision and not that of his Cabinet to order the release of Ovidio Guzmán, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, after a failed operation in October 2019 in Culiacan, in the state of Sinaloa. López Obrador pointed out that “history will tell” whether it was right or wrong to free Guzmán’s son to avoid bloodshed.
On Oct. 17, 2019, Mexican soldiers detained Ovidio Guzmán at his home in Culiacán, which unleashed a wave of violence throughout the city, in which groups of hitmen terrorized the city and freed around 50 inmates from a prison.
Arturo Zaldívar. López Obrador expressed his support for President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) Arturo Zaldívar, saying once again that Zaldívar is an “honest and upright” man. However, López Obrador made it clear that he could not say the same of other ministers, judges, or magistrates. Likewise, López Obrador pointed out that there is still a need to combat corruption thoroughly in the Judicial Power and the Executive.
“Va por México.” López Obrador said the “Va por México” coalition, made up of the PRI, PAN and PRD parties, that will run in certain 2022 state elections shows that these parties have common affinities. “They have every right to group together. All the parties do so in the world, not only in Mexico. The parties ally when there is an affinity and they have an affinity,” he said. The three parties continue to negotiate an eventual coalition in Oaxaca and Quintana Roo, the other two states that will also have elections on June 5, 2022.
AMLO criticizes UN . The president criticized the UN for failing to address inequality, fighting corruption and equitable distribution of vaccines. “When I went to the UN, I told them that they have done practically nothing to combat corruption and confront inequalities. I gave them the example of vaccines. We presented a resolution at the UN to distribute vaccines through it and a mechanism was created, Covax.”
