Noodle Soup Withdrawal/Electrical Reform

Puebla update. Speaking at the Military School of Sergeants in Puebla, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Puebla’s Gov. Miguel Barbosa said that fuel theft in the state had greatly decreased since the beginning of Barbosa’s administration in August 2019. “The theft of gasoline has dropped enormously. It is not marginal. (The decline in theft) is five times greater than at the start of our government. The arrests of gangs are also made public. We have dozens of people in jail, a group of hitmen, and others are on the run,” said Barbosa. He added that he continues to work on eliminating the fuel-theft gangs.

The head of the Ministry of Defense (SEDENA), Luis Cresencio Sandoval, added that crimes of common jurisdiction are also falling in the state, including homicide and femicide, with the exception of robbery of trucks and passers-by. The state ranks 19th of 32 in terms of crime incidence nationwide.

Damaged by ‘Grace.’  López Obrador announced that government support totaling MX$35,000 (US$1,700) per household, along with basic food packages, had been delivered in 40 days to those people who were affected by Hurricane Grace in Veracruz, Puebla and Hidalgo. “In 40 days, all the support was delivered. They already have it. In other administrations, they would still be doing the paperwork. In 40 days, I can already say that around 60,000 households have already received MX$35,000 each.”

Instant soup. The head of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO), Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, announced that the agency had addressed 68 complaints from across the country related to instant soup products. “In the operation we carried out, 129,937 units of instant soups were withdrawn, corresponding to 12 products from nine different brands.” He also said that a case of non-compliance with the requirements of the labeling standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010 was found. Knorr Pasta Lista, Sheffield said, has glucose syrup among its ingredients but does not identify it as added sugars. Among the noodle soup brands impacted were Maruchan and Cup Noodles.

Electrical reform. López Obrador said that the electricity reform that he sent to the Chamber of Deputies is beneficial for the entire country and would help prevent electricity prices from rising. He said that there would not be any expropriation of the industry or nationalization of electricity, there would be free competition, but priority will be given to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). “(Private) companies will not be confiscated; there is no nationalization, there is no expropriation. They are left with a part of the market, 46 percent of the market, which is what they are now supplying, and the rest will be supplied by CFE,” he said.
