Security Assessment. Marcela Figueroa, Head, Executive Ministry of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), presented data showing a 44% decrease in daily intentional homicides since the start of the administration, reaching an average of 48.8 cases per day in February 2026. The report also indicates a 57.6% drop in extortive kidnapping, a 31.1% reduction in vehicle theft with violence, and a 21.9% decrease in total robberies with violence. Femicides also declined by 11.8%. Conversely, home robbery with violence was the only high-impact crime to record an increase, rising by 1.9%.
Minister of Security Omar García Harfuch reported on the progress of the national security strategy from September 2024 through February 2026. Highlighting the integration of over 20 federal agencies and the Armed Forces, Harfuch detailed operations such as Operation Bacanora, which led to the arrest of 12 members of the Los Rusos cell and the detention of 15 Sinaloa Cartel members in Chiapas.
Meeting With Nordic Investors. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that a delegation of Nordic entrepreneurs is in Mexico to hold high-level meetings with the government's economic cabinet. The investors, who have already spent several days in the country, are scheduled to meet with her today at Palacio Nacional. Sheinbaum noted that the delegation has expressed a strong interest in investing across various sectors of the Mexican economy, though specific projects and industries have not yet been detailed.
Mexico Responds to Shield of the Americas Exclusion. President Sheinbaum addressed the announcement made by US President Donald Trump regarding the Shield of the Americas, a military coalition of Latin American nations aimed at combating drug cartels. While Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia were excluded from the group, Sheinbaum stated that Mexico did not need an invitation.
She explained that a bilateral working group with the United States has been in place since Feb. 7, 2025, with monthly meetings held in Washington to coordinate on security and the reduction of fentanyl trafficking. The president emphasized that institutional coordination and existing understandings between the two nations take precedence over new regional declarations.
Presidential Visit to Brazil. President Sheinbaum confirmed the high probability of an official visit to Brazil before June 2026 to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The objective of the trip is to review and consolidate complementary economic actions that both administrations have been developing for several months. Sheinbaum explicitly ruled out the signing of a new free trade agreement, stating that such a move could be counterproductive for both national economies. The timing of the visit is constrained by Brazil’s upcoming electoral cycle, which is expected to begin in June.
