Supreme Court of Justice. The Plenary of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN) elected this Monday, in a close vote, Norma Lucía Piña Hernández as the new president of the court for the 2022-2026 term, making her the first woman to preside over this body. During the morning press conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted this as a historical event. “I thought it was good. For the first time, a woman will be president of SCJN since 1825, almost two centuries (...) I am very pleased that this is happening in Mexico because it is for the better, so there is authentic rule of law.”

Minister Yasmín Esquivel. López Obrador once again defended Minister Yasmín Esquivel, who was accused of plagiarism in her undergraduate thesis. “Esquivel Mossa’s matter must be resolved by UNAM.” The president addressed those who accused the minister by making it clear that they had no moral authority to accuse her of plagiarism. He clarified that those who accuse Minister Yasmín Esquivel of plagiarism “are involved in corruption, have endorsed or lived off corruption.”

The election for the presidency of the Supreme Court was surrounded by controversy following the nomination of Esquivel by López Obrador in 2019 due to her being the wife of a contractor close to the government and the accusations related to plagiarism.

Election year. The president announced that he will have intense territorial work to supervise government works that are still pending this year. He emphasized that the last year before being relieved of office, he will travel to various states of the country to guarantee that the projects undertaken by his administration are completed in due time and form. “We have many things, (...) this year there will be much work, especially in the territory, as we always say’ territory, not desk’, to be supervising. The truth is that most of the public servants are at 100 percent; they are working and we have many open fronts,” said Lopéz Obrador.

Letter to Biden. The president announced that he sent a letter to US President Joe Biden, suggesting the topics to be discussed at the North American Leaders’ Summit. “I already sent the letter yesterday in which we suggest the topics we should deal with, of course respecting that he also brings his agenda, and (...) clarifying that we are open to deal with any topic of President Biden.”
