Welfare Banks. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that by 2Q23, 500 branches of the Welfare Bank will be built. However, he said they would not be operating immediately after opening.

Optimism for 2023. “Macroeconomic balance is going to be maintained. That is why I believe that we are going to move forward, that our economy is going to be consolidated this year, that we are going to continue to maintain macroeconomic balances and that we are going to have good tax collection as no corruption or luxuries are allowed in the government,” said the president. López Obrador said that he welcomes this year with optimism, looking to consolidate the economy and security through the transformation of the country.

Lula da Silva. Following the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as president of Brazil, López Obrador said that the governments of Mexico and Brazil fully agree that the fight must reduce inequality and prioritize justice. “This government will fight for equality and justice in complex situations. President Lula has much political skill and he is a very experienced man; he will have a belligerent opposition,” he said.

Supreme Court’s Presidency. López Obrador said he has no influence in the appointment of the new minister-president of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN), who will be elected this Monday, January 2. “I have no interference of any kind. If I were as my adversaries think, then the position would go to whomever the president decides, but it is not like that. We are not equal. Mexico cannot be governed without moral authority,” he said. The Mexican president also lashed out against the courts, which he assured have been “kidnapped and overshadowed by the economic power.”

López Obrador once again defended the minister and candidate for the presidency of the SCJN, Yasmín Esquivel, who was involved in controversy after being accused of plagiarizing her undergraduate thesis and being questioned for her closeness to the government.
