Progress on Clean Energy Project / Venezuela-US Conflict

Clean Energy Projects, Transmission Network Expansion. CFE Director General Emilia Calleja presented the latest progress in energy infrastructure, emphasizing both new clean generation projects and key transmission works to support Mexico’s industrial growth.

Calleja shared that three clean energy projects located in Durango, Quintana Roo, and Guanajuato are currently under joint evaluation. Their combined capacity is yet to be finalized, but they are part of CFE’s broader effort to expand renewable energy offerings and reinforce national energy security.

“In the coming months, we will be working collaboratively … all aimed at ensuring CFE progresses in an organized and strategic manner,” Calleja explained. She added that the process “reflects coordinated work to integrate clean capacity into our electrical system,” particularly in areas where industrial expansion demands greater infrastructure.

Progress on Combined-Cycle Plants. Minister of Energy Luz Elena González provided an update on public investments in Mexico’s power infrastructure and shared results from a recent call for private-sector participation in renewable energy projects.

González reported that four combined-cycle plants are already operational, while the remaining plant in Los Cabos is set to begin operations in January. She also highlighted that two new plants by CFE are planned to strengthen the supply of firm energy through combined-cycle technology.

Regarding clean energy, González noted that Phase 3 of the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic project is currently under construction. Together with the previous phases, this initiative will help increase the renewable energy generation managed by CFE.

Conflict between the United States and Venezuela. President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s longstanding foreign policy principles and called on the UN to intervene diplomatically to prevent rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico strictly adheres to constitutional principles of non-intervention, non-interference, respect for self-determination, and peaceful resolution of disputes. 

Yesterday, Donald Trump ordered a complete blockade on all US-sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump described Venezuela as “completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America” and cited reasons including terrorism, drug smuggling, human trafficking, and the alleged theft of US assets, labeling the Venezuelan government a “foreign terrorist organization.” Venezuela condemned the move, accusing the United States of attempting to seize national resources.
