September earthquakes. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent his condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquakes of September 19, 1985 and September 19, 2017. He also saluted the heroism of the Mexican population in these times of need, during the rescue and restoration efforts following these disasters. According to Laura Velázquez, National Coordinator, Civil Protection, the earthquakes Mexico has gone through between 1985 and 2022 have resulted in losses of MX$356 billion and over 6,500 deaths.

Today, the seismic alert will be activated in nine states, including Mexico City, during the national earthquake drill in which all 32 states will participate. “Education is key to face these natural phenomena. Prevention is essential, as we know that we already have the solidarity of the Mexican people. This is a blessing,” said the president.

New Ambassador in Canada. López Obrador trusts there will not be any issues with the appointment of Carlos Joaquín González, Governor, Quintana Roo, as Mexico’s new Ambassador to Canada, although it will still be some time before he enters office. González was chosen for this position given his experience in promoting tourism in the region. Now, the still governor will be in charge of promoting tourism at the national level.

“There are many tourists coming from Canada to Quintana Roo. Carlos has a lot of experience and he will continue to promote tourism, especially to Quintana Roo, as it is an option that can benefit many,” said the president.

Ukrainian truce proposal distorted. During the Independence Day celebrations last week, López Obrador announced he will send a five-year truce proposal to the UN through Minister of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, which he said will help all nations to better focus on global issues. The president condemned Russia’s invasion but also criticized the actions taken by Western countries. The proposal has received negative opinions and criticism, even from Ukranian President Volodímir Zelenski. López Obrador, however, said that his words were distorted, putting him on the side of Russia, which was the reason for such harsh criticism.

“What they did was to change the meaning of the proposal, which only seeks peace. They put me on the side of Russia. I have already dealt with this before,” said the president. Despite the comments, López Obrador expects the proposal to be accepted by the ONU, as it is “in everyone’s best interest,” he said.
