Remittance Tax. President Sheinbaum stated that, if needed, her administration will organize peaceful demonstrations in the United States to oppose any proposed tax on remittances. “A delegation will go. (...) If necessary, we will hold peaceful protests to express our disagreement and explain why we oppose this tax,” the president said. She also mentioned that similar actions could take place within Mexico if required.

Last week, US House of Representatives has approved a bill that includes a 3.5% tax on remittances sent by foreign residents to their countries of origin. The measure represents a reduction from the initial proposal, which sought a 5% rate. The bill, part of a broader fiscal package championed by Donald Trump, will now proceed to the Senate, where it is expected to be debated by the Republican majority with the aim of securing final approval before July 4.

Enkoll Survey on 2025 Judicial Elections. President Claudia Sheinbaum presented the results of a survey conducted by Enkoll regarding the upcoming 2025 judicial elections in Mexico.

When asked, “Are you aware that in the coming days there will be an election to choose justices, magistrates, and judges for the Judicial Branch?”, 86% of respondents said yes. In response to the question, “Can you tell me when this election will take place?”, 48% answered June 1, while 12% only knew it would happen sometime in June. When asked, “How likely are you to vote in the upcoming elections for justices, magistrates, and judges?”, 38% said they plan to participate.
