Remittances. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that remittances broke a record in 2022 and thanked Mexican immigrants living abroad for sending money to their families. "I take this opportunity to reiterate my thanks to our compatriots. We closed the year with US$58.897 billion, representing a significant increase. "

According to the Bank of Mexico, the country became the second largest recipient of remittances in the world. In 2022, there was a 13.4 percent increase compared to the US$51.586 billion received in 2021. Officials said this amount exceeded expectations, since many expected to be affected by the slowdown of the US economy.

Cuban doctors and SEP officials. President López Obrador concurs with the idea that doctors doctors from other countries, such as Cuba, come to Mexico and work. He also said there is nothing wrong with hiring other foreigners such as Nicolás Maduro's former official to remake educational textbooks.

López Obrador has been widely criticized for wanting to hire Cuban doctors to work in Mexico’s marginalized areas. Therefore, the government announced it would create employment positions for Mexican doctors. Previously, López Obrador reported that the country had a deficit of 50,000 doctors, a problem exacerbated in rural areas, since Mexican medical professionals seek to study and work in larger cities. The president said that, sometimes, Mexican doctors even refuse to move to rural areas. Meanwhile, medical and professional organizations in Mexico have claimed that López Obrador's initiative discriminates against Mexican doctors because they already compete in an oversaturated job market.

Since Jan. 2021, former Venezuelan official Sady Loaiza has been Director of Development and Innovation for Educational Materials at the Ministry of Public Education (SEP). Among his main tasks is to the redesign and write Textbook and educational material content. Several people have opposed his role in the SEP due to the propaganda of a possible left-wing ideology.

Presidential elections. President López Obrador said that the fourth transformation will continue with the new government that will be elected in 2024. “I want to make the most of the time I have left as president and hand over a functional government. . I am sure the transformation process will continue in 2024.”

In 2024, presidential elections will be held on June 2. According to a Reforma poll, MORENA is in the lead with 47 percent. Meanwhile, PAN has 19 percent of the vote, PRI 18 percent and Movimiento Ciudadano 6 percent. MORENA's favorite presidential candidates are Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
