Sheinbaum Meets FIFA’s Infantino on 2026 World Cup Plans

President Claudia Sheinbaum met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the National Palace on Aug. 28 to discuss Mexico’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The discussions focused on match locations, economic impact, and infrastructure plans for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Mexico is set to host 13 matches, including the opening game at Estadio Azteca on June 11, 2026.

“Mexico will have the honor of hosting the opening match at Estadio Azteca,” Sheinbaum said in a social media post, highlighting Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey as the official host cities.

During the meeting, Infantino presented Sheinbaum with a symbolic gift—a large replica of a front-row ticket for the opening match, labeled seat number one. The leaders also posed with the FIFA World Cup trophy, marking a milestone in preparations for the tournament, which will make Mexico the first country to host three editions of the World Cup, after 1970 and 1986.

The 2026 edition will be the largest in history, featuring 48 national teams competing in 104 matches across the three host nations. According to the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), the tournament is expected to generate around US$3 billion in economic impact in Mexico, with tourism revenues projected to surpass US$1 billion from an estimated 5.5 million visitors.

The FMF also anticipates 24,000 new jobs and US$200 million in investments for stadium and infrastructure improvements, key topics discussed during the meeting.

At a press conference on August 29, Sheinbaum shared her excitement, saying, “I feel happy. Yesterday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino came. On June 11, the World Cup will open at Estadio Azteca; it is getting close.” She added that she received ticket number 001 for the opening match and plans to give it to a young woman who loves football but has not had the opportunity to attend a game.
