Sheinbaum Meets German President / 89th Banking Convention

Security Assessment. Minister of Security Omar García Harfuch reported on a major operation in Sinaloa involving three confrontations with armed cells. The incidents resulted in 11 assailants killed and injuries to three SEMAR elements and one security officer. Authorities seized a dozen firearms, tactical gear, and 10 stolen vehicles. Harfuch highlighted results in Quintana Roo, where homicide rates have dropped 79% since September 2024, and extortion has decreased 45% due to the National Anti-Extortion Strategy.

Mexico to Send a Diplomatic Note to the United States. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico is sending a stronger diplomatic note to the United States following the death of a Mexican citizen in ICE custody. While preliminary reports suggest suicide, the President demanded a profound investigation. 

Sheinbaum Meets German President. President Sheinbaum confirmed a successful meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Cancun to discuss scientific cooperation and the update of the Mexico-EU trade agreement scheduled for May 2026, as well as the international conflicts. 

Sheinbaum Attends the Banking Convention. President Sheinbaum closed the 89th Banking Convention with an agreement where the Mexican banking sector committed to increasing credit to 45% of the GDP by 2030. To facilitate this expansion, she submitted a new strategic infrastructure law to Congress designed to manage a MX$5.6 trillion (US$312.6 billion) investment plan across the energy and technology sectors during her period. 

The administration also confirmed that digital payments for gasoline and highway tolls will become mandatory this year.
