Sheinbaum, Trump Hold Phone Call After Cancelled G7 Meeting

US President Donald Trump and President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed that they had a good phone conversation, after an in-person meeting scheduled during the G7 Summit was cancelled. White House sources confirmed the call took place and echoed the description as “good.” Sheinbaum had previously used the same term to summarize their exchange.

“I had a very good phone conversation with President Donald Trump, who explained that he had to leave urgently yesterday due to the situation in the Middle East. We agreed to keep working together toward solutions on key issues affecting both nations,” Sheinbaum said.

Trump returned to Washington to consult with his National Security Council over escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, while Sheinbaum remained in Canada for the G7 Summit.

The two leaders were scheduled to meet face-to-face for the first time during the summit in Kananaskis, where Mexico is attending as a guest nation. The meeting was called off after Trump left on the summit’s first day, responding to the crisis in the Middle East.

Their meeting was expected to address increasing bilateral tensions over the ongoing tariff dispute with Washington, US immigration raids, and a proposed 3.5% tax on remittances sent by undocumented migrants, currently under discussion in the US Congress.

What Prompted Trump to Leave the G7 Meeting?
Israel launched extensive strikes across Iran on Friday, targeting key military and nuclear sites. The attacks resulted in the deaths of several high-profile Iranian military leaders, including Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Commander Hossein Salami, and 600 civilians, according to state media. Iran condemned the strikes as an “aggression” and a “declaration of war,” while Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed retaliation. 

The international community, meanwhile, called for maximum restraint to avoid further escalation. The incident underscores growing tensions in the region amid Iran’s advancing nuclear program and ongoing diplomatic struggles to ease conflict.
