Violence Toward Candidates/ Low GDP Growth

Protection for politicians, candidates ahead of elections. Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodríguez announced that the government had addressed 234 cases of candidates who had been threatened or attacked in relation to the June legislative elections. “From March 4 to April 30, we addressed and analyzed a total of 234 cases of candidates who have reported threats or attacks, of which 133 are men and 101 women.” Icela added that protection had been granted in 109 cases, 113 cases are being evaluated for possible measures and 12 cases have been closed.

Low GDP growth in the first quarter of 2021. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted that Mexico’s economy continues to grow, after INEGI reported a 0.4 percent in GDP expansion in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter’s 3.3 percent growth. "It is still low, but we are growing and the growth forecast for this year is 5-6 percent," said López Obrador.

New fertilizer company. López Obrador announced the creation of a new company to produce fertilizer, in addition to recovering all the fertilizer plants that were delivered during the tenures of other governments. "We are going to recover all the plants and we are going to create a company for the production of fertilizers. There are plants in Coatzacoalcos that we are going to integrate." López Obrador explained that after a in-depth analysis, it was decided that it would be better to refurbish the plants to avoid losses. He added that the government would save money because it would no longer need to import fertilizer.

Executive change at Bal Group. López Obrador said that the change in the presidency of Bal Group is positive because the new president will generate confidence for the group to continue being an important investor in Mexico. Bal Group includes several companies, including Profuturo, GNP, Palacio de Hierro, Peñoles, Fresnillo, Petrobal and Electrobal.

López Obrador said that the new president will be Alejandro Baillères, son of Alberto Baillères, who was president and will now be Honorary Life President. “The transition of administrative and business management was completed yesterday afternoon. After 54 years of the presidency of Alberto Baillères, he handed over the position to his son,” said López Obrador.

US will send 5 million AstraZeneca vaccines to Mexico. Lopez Obrador announced that it is likely that the US will send 5 million AstraZeneca vaccines to Mexico as a “loan.” In addition, López Obrador mentioned that regarding the production plant in Mexico, "all the tests are being carried out to be sure about the efficacy of the vaccine. All the tests are going well."

Reopening of the Mexico-US border. López Obrador announced that next week he will talk with US Vice President Kamala Harris and "discuss issues such as the opening of the borders that will soon happen because there is also a desire from the US to normalize relations and exchanges," said López Obrador.
