Another important trend is the race to build the infrastructure behind AI systems. What This Means for Mexico
Mexico is still in the early stages of developing a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence. There is already a data protection law, the Federal Law on Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties, which regulates how companies collect and process personal information. However, there is still no comprehensive policy focused specifically on AI governance.
At the same time, many companies are already experimenting with AI tools without fully understanding the risks involved. Teams often use generative AI for productivity, marketing, or internal tasks without clear rules about what data can be shared, which platforms should be used, or how information is stored. This lack of clarity can lead to serious risks, including the exposure of sensitive corporate or customer data.
Discussions about AI regulation are also beginning to appear in public policy. In March 2026, President Claudia Sheinbaum presented an electoral reform proposal requiring political content created or modified with AI to be clearly labeled. Although the proposal focuses on elections and still needs congressional approval, it reflects growing concern about how AI-generated content could influence public information.
For companies, the priority should be to build clear rules for how AI is used. This includes internal policies, employee training, and stronger practices to protect company and customer data as AI becomes part of everyday business.
The future of artificial intelligence will not be defined just by having better technology. It will depend on how data is managed, who controls it, and how responsibly it is used. In the AI economy, data is no longer just information, it’s infrastructure.
