BBVA Debuts CO₂ Offset Tool for Clients in Mexico
BBVA Mexico has launched a new feature in its BBVA MX mobile app that enables customers to offset their carbon emissions by contributing to verified reforestation projects—a first-of-its-kind initiative among Mexican banks.
Starting in August 2025, BBVA clients who record more than one metric ton of CO₂ emissions—roughly equivalent to three months of household electricity use—will be able to make donations using a credit card, debit card, or BBVA reward points. The proceeds will support two forest conservation projects in Chihuahua: “Guardianes del Bosque Tarahumara” and “Pulmones de la Sierra Madre Occidental.” Both projects are managed by MÉXICO2, an organization affiliated with the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV). After contributing, clients will receive a unique contribution number and an internationally recognized certificate confirming their support.
Ricardo Fernández de Mazarambroz, Director of the Sustainability Network, BBVA Mexico, stated, “This project marks a significant milestone, as we are the first bank in the country to make it simple and transparent for all digital clients to support forest conservation projects.”
Eduardo Piquero, CEO, MÉXICO2, highlighted BBVA’s potential impact on national emissions, noting that with a digital customer base of 25.7 million, the bank can significantly accelerate the development of carbon-capture projects aligned with Mexico’s Paris Agreement commitments.
This initiative expands on BBVA’s February 2023 launch of its carbon footprint calculator, which estimates emissions based on customer transactions—expressed in kilograms of CO₂ and contextualized through real-world comparisons.
